Today, Wine Institute released the following statement from President and CEO Robert P. Koch in response to the administration’s announcement of new reciprocal tariffs affecting numerous trade partners, including those involved in the import and export of wine with the United States.

California Vintners Report Exceptional Quality for 2023 Harvest

Plentiful winter rains revitalized the soils and encouraged healthy canopies while cooler temperatures across California in spring and summer allowed grapes to develop gradually, enjoying extra ripening time. Many vintners predict that the 2023 vintage will be one of the finest in years, producing wines with beautiful flavors, vibrant acidity and remarkable balance.
California 2023 Winegrape Harvest Promises High Quality Despite the Late Start
The 2023 California winegrape harvest has gotten off to a late start, with vintners just beginning to pick in most regions. Due to cooler temperatures this spring and summer, which have allowed grapes to mature slowly and gradually, timing is anywhere from a week or two behind normal to nearly a month late. While it is still early in the harvest, California vintners are looking forward to a high-quality 2023 vintage.

September is the 19th annual California Wine Month, a time to raise a glass to the state’s wine industry and celebrate its people, regions, wines and experiences. Today, one week before California’s Down to Earth Month begins, four of the state’s premier wineries were awarded California Green Medal Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards, joining 32 past winners from throughout the Golden State. These awardees are recognized for their advanced sustainability practices and innovation based on a comprehensive judging process focused on both sustainable viticulture and winemaking. Presented by several California wine organizations devoted to sustainability, four green medals are awarded annually in the following categories: Leader, Environment, Community and Business.
