The American Ladder Institute (ALI) is gearing up to celebrate 10 Years of Safer Climbing with the coming 10th anniversary of National Ladder Safety Month in 2026. The only program in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to promoting safe ladder use both in the workplace and at home, first observed in 2016, has since helped millions of organizations and individuals reduce ladder-related risk, injuries, and fatalities through education, training, and advocacy.

Every home has at least one ladder, sometimes even two, three or more. Yet it’s remarkable how much there is to learn about such a seemingly simple device. The American Ladder Institute (ALI) is here to help – and there’s no better time to learn than the month of March. Each year, it is designated National Ladder Safety Month. The months leading up to March are critical because the milestone month does more than amplify a safety message; it also celebrates message penetration and accident reduction.

The theme of this year’s National Ladder Safety Month, observed throughout March, is “Safe at Work. Safe at Home.” It was specifically chosen to emphasize that the workplace is not the only place where safe ladder practices should be used. Taking the time to become familiar with basic ladder safety is something every homeowner should do, and is encouraged by the American Ladder Institute (ALI), the founder of National Ladder Safety Month.

When ladders are used as intended and a few simple rules are followed, their usage can be safe and productive. However, each year, injuries from ladder falls still number in the hundreds of thousands – estimates range from 150,000 to 500,000. Hundreds of people die as a result. Many of these incidents happen at home. But DIY home improvement projects, regular home maintenance, and repairs that require climbing can be done safely with thorough safety planning and proper training.

A ladder-related fatality happens nearly every day in the U.S., according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and a half-million people are treated for ladder-related injuries each year. The American Ladder Institute (ALI) founded National Ladder Safety Month to help reduce those numbers and promote safe use of ladders in the home and on the job.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, every year 500,000 people are treated for ladder-related injuries. Approximately 300 of these incidents prove to be fatal.
