Fentanyl overdose deaths, caused by the deadly opioid, have finally dropped in the US, drug prevention strategies and other actions have been attributed to the decrease.
provisional decease of 16.9% for 2024 based on the Center for Disease Control statistics. This will be finalized next year when all the statistics are in. This decrease is being celebrated by drug prevention groups and local law enforcement as well as emergency room doctors.
-- Overdose deaths are the third leading cause of death in the United States behind heart disease and cancer. Most of these deaths were caused by fentanyl. Good news is finally on the horizon with aThe Foundation for a Drug-Free World’s DC chapter has helped to spread this news in community meetings and amongst drug prevention professionals.
Many factors are considered to be causing this trend including community drug awareness and prevention activities, increased interdiction efforts, and the increasingly widespread availability of Narcan to prevent overdose deaths. Those saved by Narcan are increasingly gotten into drug treatment to prevent future overdoses.
Surprisingly, a factor in the decrease in fentanyl deaths reported by the Wall Street Journal in October 2023, is a drug cartel ordering its “staff” to stop making fentanyl.
Widespread drug prevention activities by various organizations have also decreased the demand for fentanyl. The Foundation for a Drug-Free World has manned drug information booths every week at various events, including sport camps sponsored by professional athletes and after-school activities which distributed educational materials and delivered lectures on the dangers of fentanyl.
Thalia Ghiglia, of Drug-Free World’s DC chapter, said, “A common question I get is, ‘What can I do to help make things better?’ Accurate and factual drug education on a grassroots level is the undercut to all of our drug abuse issues. Good news at the end of the year showing that drug overdose deaths are trending down is very gratifying. The trend should continue with more people being informed and making better choices in their lives.”
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World offers free booklets and a free documentary featuring interviews with former drug users telling the truth about their experiences with various drugs.
